When we approached the branding of the Mekudeshet 2018 festival, we knew we needed to reinvent ourselves, after having broken every possible boundary in our branding process of the Mekudeshet 2017 festival a year earlier. So how do you do it again? Through the ultimate Improv Design process. Three senior designers from our office were shipped off to participate in a 3-day workshop in Jerusalem together with the Mekudeshet 2018 border dissolvers. We armed our designers with every possible type of graphic tool, from digital platforms to cameras and different plastic materials, with our only guidance being to return with some insights.
Three intensive days of meetings and exercises in the spirit of Improv Design yielded a fascinating concept with the potential for infinite evolution: “random meetings”. We collected all the graphic and verbal images that came up during the 3 days of the workshop and fed them into a generator we built specifically for this purpose. We then invited designers of all 3 religions to a creative hackathon and asked them to react freely to anything that came out of the generator. A new language for Mekudeshet 2018 came about, in the same way its predecessor in 2017 was created from scratch.

The random meetings concept was represented in the new logo we’d designed in collaboration with an international font designer. The logo blends the 3 languages together in a way that has never been done before and thus expresses so precisely the connection of the multiple religions at the festival.

Open for me is a partnership that has become a mating (in the clinical sense), from which a unique offspring was born that carries the DNA of Open and Mekudeshet. A brilliant and sensitive offspring that we raise together
